Affordable Senior Living in Hawaii Opening Fall 2021
We are so pleased to announce the upcoming opening of Makamae House - an innovative senior living facility modeled upon the world-renowned “Blue Zones” healthy living habits - in Fall 2021.
What are Blue Zones?
The Blue Zones describe five regions in Europe, Latin America, Asia and the U.S. that researchers have identified as having the highest concentrations of people living over the age of 100. This longevity has been attributed to a combination of variables summed up as The Power 9. The Power Nine are healthy living habits that relate to diet, movement, socialization, community, sense of purpose, and environment.
At Makamae House, we believe that the Blue Zones concept and we know it will benefit our seniors. HMSA, Kaiser and the Hawaii State government have already promoted this as a path to wellness. We can not only extend life by following these concepts but perhaps, more importantly, the quality of life is vastly improved.
Hilo, Hawaii - The World’s Next Blue Zone
In Hilo, where the founders of Makamae House were raised and have strong roots, people are already familiar with the Blue Zone concept. It is in our nature to produce and eat lots of fresh fish, fruit and vegetables. Socializing with longtime friends is part of the fabric of our life. community clubs and church are the foundation of our town. We have a generous spirit, helping others in need and looking out for each other.
However, for most seniors, it requires enormous support to be able to implement the concepts of eating well, being active, having a purpose and being part of a community. This is where Makamae House comes in.
Our Vision for Makamae House
Our dream for Makamae House is to create a special place to live for up to 10 independent seniors where we can take care of all of life’s routine chores and allow our residents to live their best life.
We have no buy-in fee unlike most senior housing.
We have a flat rent that covers a private apartment and bathroom, laundry facilities, meals and transportation. Utilities and landscaping are covered.
Housekeeping and laundry available as needed.
Exciting dinners will be provided by a gourmet, Blue-Zone certified restaurant in Hilo.
We have a game room planned for socializing over cards, mah-jong, reading or playing guitar.
Independent Living Within a Tight-knit Community of Like-minded Seniors
Equally important as we grow older is having a sense of purpose. We will partner with UH Medical School to allow primary care medical students to come and learn from and with our residents. Sharing knowledge from one generation to another is the backbone of our culture.
We plan on working with UH Hilo to bring students over to help with computer tutorials so that our kupuna can Facetime and keep up with their families on Facebook. Along the way, they are making connections with young people and each is impacting the other’s life. On quiet days at Makamae House, we hope our seniors will participate in the raised garden beds where we will be farming our own vegetables and fruits.
Our Makamae House van will be available to drive residents to doctor’s appointments, church, Zippy’s on Saturday morning or different community events. We want our seniors to stay active, walking Bay Front or Liliu’okalani park. If we stay moving, we stay healthy. Most importantly, we are creating a community where our residents become a family. They will look in on each other. A friendly face and activities in common will bring meaning to their lives.
No one should age alone and you don’t have to.
