the blue zone model

The design and philosophies of our home are largely informed by Dan Buettner’s research on “Blue Zones.” The Blue Zones are five places in the world where it has been recognized that people live the longest, healthiest lives. This longevity has been attributed to a variety of factors including diet, exercise, lifestyle, community engagement, and connection.

We believe that Hilo, Hawaii can become the next Blue Zone. Already there are statewide initiatives to apply the Blue Zone concept to healthy aging in Hawaii. In Hilo, it is woven into our culture to produce and eat lots of fresh fish, fruit, and vegetables. Socializing with longtime friends is part of the fabric of our lives. Community clubs and churches are the foundation of our town. We have a generous spirit, helping others in need and looking out for each other.

Makamae House is a place where seniors can live consciously and collectively…

It is a safe home for people to age while maintaining, and even improving, their quality of life. It is a refuge that supports health, hope, longevity, independence, and community all in one.

Program Foundations

Our program foundations are based upon the “Power 9,” a Blue Zone term used to describe nine guiding principles that support healthy aging.

Connect with yourself and others

For most Hawaiian people, socializing with longtime friends is part of the fabric of our lives. Community clubs and churches are foundation of our communities and helping others in need comes second nature.

At Makamae House, we build on these cultural foundations by providing space for independent living within a close knit community so that residents can support each other on their continued paths to wellness and longevity.

Nourish your mind and body

One of the key factors that is said to contribute to the longevity of people living in Blue Zones is diet. At Makamae House, we offer exciting meals prepared by a Blue Zone certified chefs. Our menu features whole grains, legumes, fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables, indigenous herbs, as well as fresh fish and some meat.

We encourage residents to dine together in our community dining room to enjoy this fresh and nourishing food while engaging in pleasant conversation or planning the day’s activities.

Move with joy & ease

Remaining physically active is another key component of the Blue Zone concept and our philosophy at Makamae House. We encourage all of our residents to participate in daily exercise whether this be taking a stroll through the grounds with friends, gardening, or participating in a gentle yoga class. Check out a sample exercise schedule below.

Discover your meaning and purpose

Aging offers an opportunity for reflection, deepening, and growth. Part of this is discovering (or rediscovering) your meaning and purpose in life. This may be difficult for individuals who have previously attached themselves to their careers, families, or spouses, and now have the chance to explore their individual interests and drives.

At Makamae House, we provide a supportive environment with a variety of engaging and inspirational sights, sounds, and activities in order to facilitate you journey towards greater self awareness and contentment.
